About this Project

My current direction in painting uses geometric architecture to build psychological masks and futuristic spaces. Elementary shapes and electric colors vibrate in a structured game of optical pinball. Deep space is illuminated by hovering orbs, gamma rays, and hidden phenomena. Primary shapes, predominantly pointed planes, fracture and expand in a synthetic cosmic Rorschach.

These paintings are abstract pyschological landscapes informed by cartoons, comics, sci-fi, urban layering, and street aesthetics. This body of work builds on a drawing process that combines subconcious doodling with analytical picture construction. My language encompasses an iconography of absurdist motifs. Rays, spurts, pulses, diamonds, blips, buffs, droplets, and letterforms serve as building blocks for larger architectures. Heads and eyes inhabit these worlds as self-referential symbols of viewing and observing, echoing roles of audience and artist. These teeming compositions are reactions to the culture of material accumulation and the inescapable reality of visual saturation.

Drawing is the genesis for all of my work. These pieces represent refined examples of how my process begins with dividing space, layering, and structuring. The immediacy of drawing encourages a swift crystallization of imagery.

The wall work functions as an opportunity to explore imagery on a large scale. Based on thumbnail notebook drawings, these works are transformed by the application of alternative processes.

"Buff Titan" is a wallpainting I did for “Vision Quest,” a group exhibition at School 33 Art Center in September of 2008. The title refers to the titanium buff color used as the base for the overlayed network of lines. The transposed words also humorously point to mythological empires and what could be a fantastical glyph on the door of temple.

"Mirage" is a cut paper piece that was exhibited in “Domino Overflo,” a solo show at the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts in Wilmington, October 2006. Constructed out of large modular webs, these clusters of fractal noise form a large symmetrical mass of linear bursts. Each cutout is painted dayglo on the back and sits about an inch from the wall. The color reflects from the white of the wall, lending a hue to the cast shadows. The arrangement reveals itself as fireworks or the manifestation of otherworldly phenomena over a rolling desert landscape. A menacing face emerges from the static.

About this Project

This transitional series of small-scale paintings served as a platform to explore simple geometries and color interaction. The angular divisions and pointed planes build on systems that began to appear in my cutout work. Egyptian and Native American motifs combine with formats influenced by early video games. The base language of nodes and pathways that began here proliferates in the newer work.
