About this Project

My work is representational drawing and painting generally depicting two figures. The compositions consist of either literally two figures, two teams of figures or one figure that engages the viewer to act as the second party. I am interested in the energy exchanged between these two bodies and the tension that arises from varying points of view.

In my paintings I have used water as the visual representation of the exchanged energy, a fluid mass that undulates between figures, responding to and initiating change. In my drawings I am exploring the psychological tension felt when figures are taken out of context. In both media, I reference scenes from personal experience and popular imagery. I intend to create works that are specific while retaining a notion of collective experience.

Sometimes I use the aid of props or patterns to illustrate the parallel or divergent natures of the two figures: a flag, a grid, cracking cement. I observe the material objects with which we surround ourselves and question how and if they relate to our true nature. I ask the viewer to insert his or her own associations with these objects when contemplating the specific relationship presented in each piece.
