About this Project

The prints were conceptually based on Homer's "The Odyssey" and inspired by Harriet Tubman's journey. The “spirit bottles” emerged as a concept to harness blessings and explore the intuitive, irrational or unconscious links. They were inspired by a Haitian voodoo bottle which are “decorated bottles” in the folk traditions of Haiti, South America and the deep south of America. They were meant to attract the spirit world and deflect/reflect magic in order to transform a situation. Bottles manifest as “bottle trees” in many southern states where African Americans lived. The voodoo bottles are commonly libation or rum bottles that are covered in sequins or beads and placed on altars as offerings.
