About this Project

In this ongoing project, I collect photographic and drawn images from the rooftops, sidewalks, and alleys of Baltimore to build an alternative version of the city's infrastructure. Each is treated as a new species-organisms which have been left to waste, to grow or to destroy those environments which bred them. Each species is coded by the form which created it; infrastructure color codes (red=electricity, blue=water, orange=communication, etc.) become the filters through which they are observed. Through drawing, animation, and digital rendering, they are studied for their potentials to be or become "real" creatures, structures, or forces of the present and the future urban landscape.

These are ongoing, working drawing/paintings on DuraLar. They accompany and feed into the digital compositions that revolve around the same subject matter and source material. The ongoing presence of these in my studio serves as a point of dialogue regarding the role of technology or lack thereof in building forms/creating worlds.

About this Project

This body of work was an exploration of building forms in a virtual manner - in the sense that they were digitally drawn and composed and in the sense that they reference a world beyond the physical realm. The catalysts for each of the environments were photographed objects from my own environment. To me, these objects are representations of how I am immersed in a society that depends on synthetic and technological inventions. Each drawing is an exercise in growing, restraining, or losing control of what I see as excessive and materialistic tendencies that we create and are subject to.
