Traditionally totems served to encapsulate the spiritual beliefs of a group or clan of people. Similarly, I created a body of work that encapsulates the aura of the subculture of which I am a member. From the beginning I knew the work would be large and “grow” from the ground up. A person standing in front of one of my totems is confronted with an undulating mass of dripping color and symmetrical form. Each piece is hand cut, hand woven, and hand painted. The cutting and weaving is an essential language of forms that upon layering reveal the macrocosmic being within. The totems thick pigment emanates prismatic light. As the eye passes through the curling forms, the illusion of motion is created. The Totems, for those who come in contact, serve both as protectors and imply new mythologies in the American landscape. The hours of repetitive cutting becomes a mantra or waking meditation. I see this process as an alchemical transformation of bodily energy into a conceptual talisman reverberating through the American collective unconscious.
