artist statement

My praxis is concerned with the relative and changeable nature of perception and how it tempers our sense of reality. I am alert to juxtapositions; of memory, the photographic or historic image, the urgency of a current moment as they reveal potent if fleeting aspects of the human condition.

My realization processes - painting, drawing, building, video, repeat and hone the fleeting recognition of event, and coalesce as sign. I am looking for a sense of the moment, to allude to both multiplicity in time and to a truth inherent in the singular ownership of recognition. It is very hard to make a simple thing; a painting or an installation that opens the opportunity for something true to emerge. I find I am, ultimately, making an elaborate platform to convey something very ephemeral.

Terrace Walk considers the pull of primordial impulses such as physical attraction/repulsion and curiosity/fear, for an exhibition entitled Nature via Nurture. The central elements of Terrace Walk are a "pool" of liquid tar, and drawings of rose hybrids executed in lipstick on ricepaper pinned to a sheer wall. In between the tar and the roses is a narrow walkway painted green, which can be accessed by the viewer.

container - explores the embodiment of cultural memory in associative objects, skills and practices thru the history of the sailing ship and its counterparts in contemporary sea transport. Numerous old, used sails, evidencing a history of past journeys through yellowing, fraying and patching, were cut through existing rigging, grommets and hardware, the stacked layers then carved into a ship form.

coordinates - is a "drawing" made of disparate reflections, inviting the viewer to glimpse his own reflection spliced with the environment around him. Rows of repeating mirror strips inside of a wooden viewing station capture reflections in a 180' arc configuration.
