This is an ongoing project. The process is very critical in this project where I draw a large number of facial expressions from various sources and later ask volunteers to imitate them. The hope is to represent as many expressions as possible creating a reference library of gestures. So far collected are 1000 faces and counting.....

In this particular series, I focus on piropos, clever Spanish pick-up lines, often reserved for the street, that carry multiple meanings. Piropos are sometimes innocent (De que juguetería te escapaste mi muñeca? [My doll, from which toy store did you escape?]), but in the case of most, they are meant to shock the recipient with vulgarity. The portraits in the Piropos series represent both the recipient and the giver—the seducer and the seduced, the predator and the prey—of these classic come-on lines.

In this project, I ask what if we could fake death or sleep as a strategy for survival or escape from a stressful situation, in the way possums and reptiles do.

The project is also performed by volunteers in public places. The volunteers are friends, other artists, students, opening reception attendees.

I have a dedicated interest in the various ways humans can communicate without spoken language- in previous projects I focused on our use of gesture or body language. In the Whistle project I focus on the ancient tonal language of whistling. On my first visit to Mexico I was struck speechless by the amount of whistling being used regularly in the markets; on the streets; and between male friends living a long distance between each other.

The Whistle Project is still in progress, I have been experimenting with the field recordings I collected last winter. Creating sound installations that incorporate my drawing works. Currently in my installations I re-contextualize the whistles, using them as sound tracks for my drawings of perverse moments shared between imagined people. I am working towards ways of keeping the integrity of the recordings by eventually filming a video documentary concerning the whistles of Mexican men.

I work directly with the community and find volunteers throughout my travels, I ask them to whistle and translate their whistles in my recordings. My volunteers have been my friends, local store owners, young boys on the street, market vendors, to even a gang member living in Guadalajara. In my first trip to Mexico I was able to obtain numerous hours of field recordings. To continue this project and to develop this idea of creating a video documentary, I hope to make more regular trips to Mexico in the coming years.
