About this Project

"These images recall the distortions of Andre Kertesz, who
photographed reflections of the figure in fun house mirrors. With
the addition of color and the misty, often elusive quality of mylar,
Cory Donovan departs from the concrete and abstract forms of
Kertesz to find something slightly more incorporeal, more
ephemeral. The photographs display the strangeness of reality in an
age of digital manipulation.

'It is important for me to find these distorted forms, to experience
the discovery of them and their amorphous, dreamlike nature. I
could never create them using digital or darkroom manipulation.
The peculiarity of the distortion through the mylar is far more
bizarre than anything I could consciously conjure'."

About this Project

One of my favorite photographers, Arnold Newman, is one of the twentieth century's most renowned portrait photographers. While working for such publications as Life, Fortune, The New York Times, and The New Yorker, he photographed such icons as Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Igor Stravinsky, Truman Capote, George Harrison, Ayn Rand, John F. Kennedy, and many many others.

What made his images so powerful is that he managed to capture the essence of his subjects. His environmental portraits of artists, writers, musicians, and politicians seem to blur the line between his subjects and their work. They are revealing both literally and metaphorically, and are the inspiration for this body of work.
