About this Project
These works are a continuation of a decade long process of working on two parallel interests of mine. One being my creative outlet through sculpture, and the second being a more scientific one. Which is a desire to understand the math, mechanics and materials science behind what is essentially modern manufacturing machine design, and just plain Physics. I have used this dual interest to make work that contains a dialogue between artistic discovery and an understanding of the practical applications of different processes and tools and the interplay between utility and form. How form it self can be suggestive of function or more intriguing to me, how the logistical limitations of a given process or tool can inform and inspire visual solutions as well.
With a good deal of research and the help of a grant from the Pollack Krasner foundation I have been afforded the opportunity to assemble a modest machine shop by building or modifying many of my tools rather than purchasing new ones out right. These include computer operated Machine tools, Fixtures, measuring devices and even electro chemical plating and anodizing equipment. Though partly driven by financial necessity these experience have forced me into exploring many different disciplines, such as mathematics and geometry, I have had to learn a number of programming languages, brush up on electrical engineering, Pneumatics, Basic chemistry and even try my hand at engineering my own machine designs. The knowledge gained through these exercises has given me many insights into my own creative process and helped me develop the skills to devise elegant solutions to many visual and compositional problems, not to mention given me powerful tools and a more quantifiable way to evaluate my own aesthetic.
In the future I hope to continue this process of honing my artistic vision while pursuing other intellectual and engineering interest. Which, at the risk of being too forward, I hope can be realized with the help of future grants from organizations such as this one.

Design Baltimore SculptureAbout this Project
These are photos and videos from my humble little machine shop,
I thought it necessary to post a photo/Video documentary of my process because I found that it is often easier to show how I make my work rather than explain it. I recently shot these videos of some of my machines working away during a long weekend. They are time laps so they are not representative of how long it takes to make a piece, but they give a sense of the basics. The photos are ones that I took during the coarse of the year while working on different projects. These process photo's I hope will show not only what goes into making each piece but also demonstrate how my process guides my work and give a glimpse as to how my mind has to work to produce these pieces.
I am also working on documenting an entire piece from start to finish as well. You can see excerpts and descriptions below.
But If you want to see the entire photo series with descriptions I am having them posted to my website at
http://www.chrisbathgate.com/page3/process.html
so go there if you want to see and read my comments from start to finish on this piece.

About this Project
This is going to be a space were I post images of a work in progress as it goes along. It may spread out over a project groups over time. I work my boring day job all week so I only have weekends and evenings to work on my Sculpture. After each weekend I will post images of my work as I make it. Unfortunately there is a limit to how many images can be posted on this site at any one time, So some images will stay, but others will be changing over the weeks as I make progress so check back often to see whats new so you dont miss anything because I may have to delete them after a while to make room for new ones.
